Q: Hello Dakota Fate, how are you guys?
A: We’re doing great, just busy with writing new material and recording our next CD
Q: Where does the band name come from?
A: Our old bass player came up with the name, He was drunk and talking about John Lennon and him being shot in front of the Dakota Building in New York, Just a twist of fate, He fused the two idea’s together in his mind, and there you have it.
Q: How would you call the style of music you make? And how do you see the future for that style?
A: It’s sorta a blend of the metal music we all grew up on, and ideas from country music that we borrow, such as storytelling lyrics and banjos. I see the future looking good for it, look at Nashville over the last 20 years. Country is more like rock than it ever was.
Q: Who would you consider the biggest influences on your song writing & sound?
A: Were all fans of classic hard rock, and good old school country. So I would say, Black Sabbath and Johnny Cash. But we like to borrow from all sorta of influences, The Cult, Dio, Steve Earle, old Van Halen and even Waylon Jennings.
Q: How do you feel about cover songs? And are there songs that no one should cover?
A: We like covers, as long as they make a statement about the group and aren’t a carbon copy of the original, find some thing cool and make it your own. As far as songs no one should cover, that’s a tough call, I never thought “Shout” (listen: Tears for Fears/Disturbed) by Tears for Fears could be cool till I hear Disturbed do it.
Q: What inspirations do you guys have for your songs? And who usually writes the songs?
A: Again, we borrow from all over. Chris and I are the primary writers, but we try and get everyone’s input.
Q: If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would you want to perform, and why?
A: Madison Square Garden opening up for the original Van Halen. Lets face it, it ain’t gonna get cooler than that.
Q: What is the best thing about being a musician and what is the worst thing about being a musician?
A: To me the best part of it, is when you see people really connecting with what your doing and seeing the passion you have for your music. Probably the worst part of it is trying to keep up with your musical surroundings because as much fun as playing music is, if you wanna “make it” you gotta treat it like a job.
Q: If you could pick any one band or artist that you could tour with, who would it be? And why?
A: Personally, I would say Dio. He’s my hero and I’d love to play for those fans.
Q: Day or night?
Q: Club venue or arena venue?
Q: CDs or digital music?
A: CDs are digital? is this a trick question?
Q: Okay, final question. What are your thoughts on people downloading music, both legally & illegally?
A: I think it’s a way to get your music out there, people are gonna steal it no matter what you do if they want it bad enough.
Thank you Mark, and thanks Dakota Fate for doing this interview.
