1. I Saw You Hiding From The Rain Today
2. Rumor Had It
3. They’ve Shut Down Marks & Spencer
4. Left-Over Tears, Lost
The actual debut by a balladeer, basically singer/songwriter Marinus de Goederen. Containing four beautiful tracks, this EP was sold out in no time and the band is considering to re-release it. Dutch music magazines described it as “painfully beautiful” and “so beautiful it makes you cry”. And not without a reason. Influenced by bands like Counting Crows, R.E.M., Saybia, Solo & singer/songwriters like Bruce Springsteen, Nick Drake, James Taylor & Neil Young, this talented singer/songwriter created an amazing EP. And also, the production is pretty good, better than a lot of independent releases have.
Song by song review
I Saw You Hiding From The Rain Today
A short track, sort of like an introduction to the EP. Filled with emotion. You feel sorry for the character Marinus sings about in this song. The crystal-clear vocals on this song are tender and you feel like they can break any moment. In one word: Beautiful!
Rumor Had It
Marinus sounds like he’s about to cry on this track. Basically he does that often. Cause his vocals just are pure emotion. This song was released to radio and it actually got some airplay. Well-deserved airplay, cause this track is very well-written. Marinus de Goederen shows he’s one of the best lyricists out there at the moment. And not only is he a good lyricist, he can also sing like no one else. With sometimes powerful, sometimes tender, sometimes vulnerable, sometimes strong vocals, he knows how to tell a story with his voice, through his lyrics. Don’t be surprised if this guy gets worldwide recognition in the future. He has the talent, he has the will and he’s got the voice.
They’ve Shut Down Marks & Spencer
Another long song title and yet another beautiful song. Starting off with percussion, and then piano, this song is build up nicely. Musically/instrumentally this is a very interesting song. Superb piano, nice guitar riffs every now and then, topped off with the astonishing vocals. It’s like a dessert.
Left-Over Tears, Lost
Interesting song title, and also an interesting song. This song reminds me of Nick Drake, who is my favourite solo artist of all time. It’s just a man and a piano, combined with string arrangements. That’s something Nick Drake liked to do too. And Marinus does it almost as good as Nick did. And that, coming from me, is a major compliment. I don’t make this comparison out of the blue, cause Nick Drake’s string arranger later works on a balladeer’s official debut album “Panama”. This song I would indeed describe as “painfully beautiful”.
