Alkaline Trio – Maybe I’ll Catch Fire
March 14, 2000
Alkaline Trio continues to grow. The songwriting is getting stronger and more serious and the whole performance of the songs is much tighter and the timing of the songs is also getting better and better.
“Maybe I’ll Catch Fire” is a strong album where the band focuses a little more on the rock part than the punk part, and it actually seems to make their songs better. The energetic delivery and fast-paced rock action remains but it’s not as pointy and punky anymore.
On songs like You’ve Got So Far To Go you can still hear it somewhat, and also on Sleepyhead but the majority songs has more of a fast-paced rock & roll feel. Highlights are Fuck You Aurora, Maybe I’ll Catch Fire and the absolute best song on the album Radio.
The band shows some diversity and shows they can write a killer song like Radio. There’s a good build up in the song and it delivers on the right times. They took down the tempo one or two notches which enables the listener to focus more on the songwriting, which Alkaline Trio has never done better.
