Josh Ritter – Josh Ritter
Interesting new artist Josh Ritter debuts with his self-titled album (Josh Ritter). A collection of 12 (13 if you count the bonus song) folkish singer/songwriter tracks. One can easily compare the music to acts like Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Johnny Cash, whom Ritter himself also cites as influences.
Often you can divide the singer/songwriter genre into the storytellers and the balladeers, but every so often you have an artist who can combine the two beautifully. Josh Ritter falls into that category. The songwriting is pretty strong but needs a little maturing here and there, but overall the songwriting is pretty solid.
The songs on the album are mostly sublte, acoustic folky tracks that sound nice and are performed with a lot of feeling, and while there’s nothing wrong with that, this artist could shine even more if he continues to grow and shows a little more variety and diversity in his music. Songs like Hotel Song, Angels On Her Shoulders, Letter From Omaha and Horrible Qualities show there’s future in this artist, a lot of future if Ritter continues to develop and evolve. With “Josh Ritter” he announces himself to the world, but the real breakthrough, I think, will have to wait until a later release.
