Can’t Shake Me
With Can’t Shake Me, Lazyeye immediately announces their presence. With a sound that has hints to alternative acts like Breaking Benjamin & Incubus, this uptempo rocker has good rhythm and it is actually relatively catchy and would probably make for a good radio single for rock radio.
No You’re #1
No You’re #1 is a song that I really like. It has an alternative sound where the bass, drums and guitar interact really well. The strong vocals top it off and this song is one the band can be really proud of.
The album continues with the slightly more laid-back Awake which has a Default-like melodic quality as well as a deep intensity and great emotion. The band shows they are a rock band able to write and perform good songs. At 3 songs into the album, I’m very impressed.
This Is Your Captain Speaking
This Is Your Captain Speaking is another excellent song. It’s maybe a little harder than the previous songs and the band borrows some influences from the hard rock/metal scene at times (mostly in the driving guitars), but still stays true to what is their sound. The pureness of the music and the passionate performance are the heart of their music.
When The Lights Go Out
When The Lights Go Out is one of my favorite Lazyeye songs, if not my very favorite. It is catchy, has a good drive and tempo and the vocals are perfect. The drums are amazingly tight and with a very full guitar sound, this song keeps on reeling the listener in. And after a couple of listens you’ll find yourself singing along.
This next song on the album, called Perfect, is a little more laid-back again, and it really works. This could be huge on both mainstream and rock radio with it’s sensitive and passionate performance. Lyrics that are easy to sing along to but yet are quite deep if you allow yourself to think about it. The contrast between the more uptempo chorus and the slower paced verses is also working out really well.
Road Between The Lines
The alternative rocker Road Between The Lines that has some rhythmic influences from reggae-like music at times is something that I can really get into. It has a bit of an Incubus-like sound too at times. Frankly, the song’s quite diverse and the band shines on their creativity, versatility and powerful performance.
All I Need
The anthemic All I Need is a bit more mainstream. When you listen to it, you can imagine how this would also sound amazing in an acoustic version. But even with the tempo and volume taken down a few notches, Lazyeye still pulls off a stellar performance with passionate and pure emotion. The band slowly works up to a climax, slowly building up the tempo and loudness. Great songwriting.
The album is unfortunately coming to an end, but it’s coming to an end with a song that’s representative for this band. The catchy, uptempo alt-rocker Upside Down is one of the best songs this band has brought us. It sounds like an amazing live song with its passion and energy and just a lot of fun to perform, as much as it’s fun to listen to it.
With this impressive album, Lazyeye firmly tells the world they are a band worthy of attention. With very strong rock songs that are performed with energy and passion, this band must have a bright future, or else something is wrong with the music industry. There are a lot of mainstream and alternative rock acts out there, but Lazyeye is one that really deserves to be up there, because when it comes to talent and performance, they rank very high among my top of better rock bands of the past 10 years.
